Sept. ‘04– Well after skipping several of the other area fairs to concentrate on showing the dogs and horses, Lisa and DJ took their 4-H Market Wethers to the Los Angeles County Fair. The show was….to put it simply…”HUGE”. They had their largest number of market goats ever with well over 70 present, with over 50 of those coming from 4-H members (the remaining were Open Juniors, FFA and College Divisions). Lisa and DJ took two of their homebred and raised wethers, Charles and Leo, both out of Eve and by Brock, one of our past Boer bucks. The kids were born in mid-February and weighed 101lbs (Charles) and 105 lbs (Leo). Their class consisted of goats 100-110 lbs, for a total of 13 wethers in their class alone! The judge was from Buckeye, Arizona (sorry, I missed his name as the announcer was competing with the announcer from the Beef show going on next door), and when all was said and done Charles was placed 5th out of 13 and Leo received 3rd! It took the judge a LONG time (over 5 minutes) to place the top 3 goats in the class and he commented that he would have been happy with any of the top three winning the class as they were SO GOOD! His reasons for the placement of Leo—-”Obviously the best naturally muscled of the class, through the loin and down the legs, but was a bit more compact that the other 2”. DJ and Lisa were extactic as they worked very hard on these wethers and were very proud of themselves as these were the first home bred and raised full Boers they had ever shown, before they had always shown purchased wethers. Unfortunately we don’t have any good conformation shots...so below is the “boys” getting their bath before the show and under that is Lisa and DJ’s class, DJ and Lisa have “ribbons” over and under them so you can find them easier, too bad you can’t see their goats! The judge is bent over the only “non-Boer” (a Nubian) in the class. |
